PROCURATOR FISCAL FOR DUMFRIES

THANE OF CAWDOR! I WIS HOPING FER PROCURATOR FISCAL FER DUMFRIES!

Some years after Pete Williams drew his Macbeth cartoons, there was an exhibition of his work held in Chester.  One day the Curator was approached by a Scottish visitor who said how much he enjoyed Pete’s work and wondered whether any of the cartoons were for sale, in particular the one about the Procurator Fiscal for Dumfries.  The Curator phoned Pete to see if he would sell that cartoon but although Pete wasn’t interested in selling the original, he would sell a print, or perhaps more expensively, a redraw. [The one you see here is a redraw that Pete made especially for me.]  When the visitor accepted one of the two offers, the Curator, making conversation, asked why that particular cartoon had caught his eye, apart from its obvious quality. “Oh, that’s simple”, came the reply, “I was the Procurator Fiscal for Dumfries”.
