FACES OF THE VERY YOUNG

It’s not the deaths of old men
That cuts me to the quick
It’s not the surge of the blooded sea
That grieves me, makes me sick
But faces of the very young
That surface and then sink down
And sink down deep where I cannot see
Where I cannot see them drown.
